Meals on Wheels Volunteers preparing for delivery

Meals on Wheels volunteers preparing for delivery

WeCAN’s Carolyn Dillon coordinates the Meals on Wheels Program. Every day numerous volunteers deliver nutritious meals to homebound residents. The Meals on Wheels Program enables seniors and persons with disabilities to stay in their own homes, avoiding costly nursing home placements.

WeCAN delivered the first Meals on Wheels in the Mound area in 1974, and would you believe, we still have three of the original drivers delivering meals today! We serve a very large area – from St. Bonifacius to Maple Plain to parts of Orono and all of Mound, including surrounding communities.

Meals on Wheels originated in Great Britain during World War II. It was the affectionate name for the volunteer staffed canteens that provided refreshments for service men and spread to the U.S. with the first home delivered meal program in 1954.

Meals on Wheels is a lifeline to hundreds of seniors, homebound and disabled citizens here in our community. Without Meals on Wheels, many would not have the proper nutrition to maintain good health. Our volunteers deliver hot lunches every weekday. In 2008, our volunteers delivered 8,672 meals. Volunteer drivers deliver more than meals. For many homebound individuals it is a vital daily check and for some recipients the daily volunteer visits is the only contact they have with the outside world. The goal of Meals on Wheels is to keep clients in their homes and living independently for as long as possible.
