About WeCAN

Prior to WeCAN, social service centers providing human service programs for low-income families were located in downtown Minneapolis or the inner-ring suburbs. Residents from the Western Hennepin communities were inadequately accessing these centers, particularly due to challenges in transportation. Needs were not being met, and individuals and families slipped through the cracks of support networks. Local churches and volunteers were the first to address the needs of low-income families.

As local needs of families and individuals grew, the programs became difficult to manage through volunteer efforts alone.

WeCAN was founded in 1989 in response to these ever-increasing needs. As needs continued to grow, the part-time director became full time. Over time, the staffing expanded to its current level: full time Executive Director, part time Family Advocate, and part time Meals on Wheels Coordinator.

Initial funding for WeCAN included grants from foundations and community donations. Today, WeCAN operates with contributions from area individuals, businesses, churches, service organizations, various foundations, local cities, a Hennepin County contract, and through program fees.

WeCAN is now one of the few providers of human services in Western Hennepin County. Programs include: Human Services, Meals on Wheels, and Family Support Programs. Our Emergency Assistance Program offers zero interest emergency loans which are given to individuals and families in need, quickly and efficiently. Clients receive support through one on one guidance and agency referrals. Excellent Meals on Wheels service is provided to homebound individuals. “Adopt a Family,” “Birthday Shelf,” and “Ready to Learn School Supply Program” are each well utilized by families in need in the western Hennepin communities.
